UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture Joins Wells Fargo Community Celebration with “Arts in Action”
Saturday, October 29 - 10 am to 4 pm
UNC Charlotte Center City Building

As part of the Wells Fargo Community Celebration on October 29, the UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture will present “Arts in Action,” a day of free performances and exhibitions showcasing the work of the College.  All activities will take place at the new UNC Charlotte Center City Building at Brevard and Ninth Streets. Highlights include performances by the UNC Charlotte Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, scenes from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, dance demonstrations, and interactive art and architecture exhibitions and installations. The building will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 4:00 p.m., and performances will occur throughout the day. All events are family-friendly. This event is funded in part by Wells Fargo.

In the new Center City Building gallery, UNC Charlotte faculty members Maja Godlewska, Mary Tuma (Department of Art and Art History), and E.E. Balcos (Department of Dance) will create Playground, a performative installation in which Godlewska’s cloud scrims will cascade from the gallery’s 24-foot ceiling to meet Tuma’s whimsical tricycles climbing the walls. The installation will become a stage for multiple intentions: a place for Balcos’s improvisational dance, an environment to inspire the imaginative projections of the viewer, and the gleeful results of collaborative play.

The College of Arts + Architecture (CoA+A) is pleased to collaborate with two community organizations to provide additional programs on October 29. In partnership with the Jazz Arts Initiative, the CoA+A will present the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshop, a jazz improvisation clinic, in the Center City Building auditorium from 10 am to 1 pm. At 1:30 pm in the building’s lecture hall, the CoA+A and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will screen the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, followed by commentary from UNC Charlotte Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare and NY Times best-selling author Andrew Hartley. Both events are free.
