The UNC Charlotte Jazz Ensemble celebrates the 100th birthday of Charlotte-born artist Romare Bearden in Carolina Shout, a multi-media performance on December 1st in the Anne R. Belk Theater at Robinson Hall. Inspired by America’s greatest collagist, this event is part of the community-wide celebration of Bearden’s centennial that began earlier this year and is partially sponsored by Jerald Melberg Gallery.
Bearden (1911-1988) saw African American music – jazz, the blues, and gospel – as fundamental to the African American experience and therefore to his work. He created many works with music as a central subject, including a whole series of pieces called “Of the Blues” and another called “Of Jazz.”
Named after a work by Bearden, which he named after a famous stride piano piece from the 1920s, Carolina Shout will honor Bearden’s centennial with music by jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, James P. Johnson, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonius Monk; projections of Bearden’s artworks; and readings from the artist and his literary peer, Langston Hughes. The concert features guest pianist Ethan Uslan, student actors Marcel Thompkins and Leslie Gray, and the 17-piece UNC Charlotte Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Will Campbell.
Tickets are $6, $4 for seniors and all students. Details at www.performances.uncc.edu and 704-687-1849.
