What happens when you mix thoughtful questioning with creative narrative, superheroes, and a propensity to speak with the brush of pop-culture? UNC Charlotte alumni artists John Hairston and Antoine Williams answer with “Here’s to Hoping it Rhymes for a Reason,” a collaborative mural commissioned by the new Center City Building and the College of Arts + Architecture at UNC Charlotte.
Standing 30 feet wide and 12 feet tall, the mural tells a story of Queen Charlotte, cultivating minds and bringing knowledge to a diverse and vibrant Charlotte community. Begun on September 12, the mural will be completed during the Center City Building’s Community Day on Saturday, September 17. A gallery opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on September 23 will celebrate the work, which will remain in the gallery through October 22.
John Hairston and Antoine Williams, both natives of North Carolina, have been active players in the emerging artists world of the Carolinas. In their work, Hairston and Williams create fictional characters who engage in speculative commentary on the state of our world, relating to media and the artists’ personal experiences of the culture that surrounds them in a state of economic and political flux.
The UNC Charlotte Center City Building Community Day will take place on Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the muralists, local artists {Pipe}Dre@ms: De Angelo Dia, Jay Masonati & Kyle Rippley will create work on moveable gallery walls. Other activities include dance and music performances, T-shirt making, film screenings, and appearances from Norm the Niner. For more information, visit http://centercity.uncc.edu/.
About the College of Arts + Architecture Gallery System
The mission of the College of Arts + Architecture gallery system is to create lively forums in which the curious encounter the work of global, regional, and local artists through diverse media and dynamic exchanges that are nourished by the intellectual and creative life of the university. Our programming will echo crossovers of the visual arts, architecture, music, theatre, and dance inherent to the College of Arts + Architecture at UNC Charlotte. We seek to provide a haven for experimentation, to invigorate the environments we occupy, and to amplify the means to engage art and design in our community.
