The MArch II program is tailored to fit students with a four-year undergraduate degree in architecture from a NAAB accredited school. This program provides students with the opportunity to both earn a professional degree at the graduate level and to develop an area of specialization and focus through a flexible research and design degree path. The MArch II program is a full-time two-year program (fifty-six credit hours).
Through the advising process, the MArch II program builds upon the student's previous educational background and focuses upon his or her individual professional and research goals. The program involves two primary components:
The first year focuses upon comprehensive architectural building design and topical studios with advanced studies in an area of concentration. The second year is dedicated to continued study within the areas of concentration as well as thesis research and project execution.
All MArch II students are required to select an area of concentration during the first year of study. The concentration area are comprised of courses focused around three curricular themes:
- Architectural Design, Theory, and Practice
- Architectural Technology
- Urbanism
Each concentration is comprised of three elective courses (nine graduate credits).
The Architectural Design, Theory and Practice concentration provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of theoretical discourses as they relate to a critical architectural design practice. The Architectural Technology concentration allows students to focus on the seminal role of building performance and sustainability in shaping and making buildings and spaces. The Urbanism concentration exposes students to the inter-connected and complex web of issues that impact urban space and, by extension, architecture and public places.
In some cases, students may be allowed to pursue a dual degree in another discipline within the university instead of a concentration area within the School. For example, students have pursued dual master's degrees in Architecture and Geography (Community Planning) or dual master's degrees in Architecture and Business (Real Estate Development). Dual master degrees can be obtained under the guidelines of the Graduate School and by special arrangement between the School of Architecture and another university unit. Dual degree programs are, however, atypical, and cannot be awarded retroactively. If a student is interested in pursuing a dual master's degree in architecture and another discipline, a proposal must be submitted by the student to the Graduate Coordinators of both programs within the first semester of enrollment for review. Acceptance into the Master of Architecture program at UNC Charlotte does not guarantee admittance to the other graduate programs within the university. A list of application requirements of other disciplines can be obtained from the Graduate School.
