| | Book cover, Design First: Design-based planning for communities, published 2004 by The Architectural Press, Oxford, UK. Quotes from published reviews in professional journals:
" The book is compelling, insightful and rigorous in its coverage of the issues that face the urban designer in his or her attempt to build the Good City. The sections on the consequences of planning policy on cities, and the relationship of these policies to design should be required reading in every planning school. . . The Case Study section of the book compellingly relates (the authors') professional work to the body of theory presented in the middle chapters. The work demonstrates how the community design process can be part of first rate urbanism and development." New Urban News, Nov. 2004.
"The authors must be commended for a readable and thoughtful narrative of the history, theory and practice of urban design. They recall the history of how we got to where we are, from utopian reforms for the industrial city to the current sprawling contemporary city. Even better is the theory section, where the authors set out the only available detailed account of the origins an d development of New Urbanism and Smart Growth." Journal of the American Planning Association, Summer 2005.

The image shows immigration and migration patterns from Latin American into the United States. Six arrows of varying sizes overlaid upon a map of the North and South American continents indicate sources of Latino migration from Latin American countries into the United States. The largest arrow, which represents 64% of all Latin immigration, stems from Mexico. The remaining five arrows total another 31% of all Latin immigration with South American countries, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic representing 5% each. Puerto Rico provides 9% of the remaining immigrant pool while the Central American Countries combined account for another 7%. The remainder represents all other sources of Hispanic immigration to the US.
